Seven Secrets of Personal Development

These seven "secrets" aren't really secrets at all, but they might as well be, for most people don't know or use them. They aren't really new, but they'll make a new life for anyone who puts them to work.

Secret 1  All development is self development. It's up to you; no one else is involved! Development isn't something you do to a person; the drive, the desire and the willingness to pay the price comes from within the individual. You can't develop anyone but YOURSELF.

Secret 2  All development is individual. In as much as every person is different, there's no standardized development "course." We must develop ourselves, not "chase windmills" by trying to be someone else. Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote: "I will even venture to say that I am like no one in the whole world. I may be no better, but at least I am different."

Secret 3   Your success comes where it's least expected. You can't pick the "one most likely to succeed" or pick the person of "high potential" before that person has given a demonstration of his/her performance. Things happen when someone decides to pay the price. A young boy in Illinois was interested in photography so he ordered a book with his hard-earned money. The mail-order house made a mistake and sent him a book on ventriloquism! The young boy could have been mad and bitter, but he was curious and kept the book. He read it over and over, and he practiced each lesson. The man was Edgar Bergen who became one of the most famous ventriloquists ever.

Secret 4   Your ultimate potential cannot be determined by your present aptitude of personality characteristics. People of widely different personalities become equally successful in the same business. Some people with the lowest beginning aptitude have become the greatest successes. Your aptitude can be changed if your attitude is changed: it's an inside job! Most people with high potential even use their handicaps to forge ahead.

Secret 5   Most of your development will depend upon what happens to you on a day-to-day basis: your attitude, your persistence stick-to-it-iveness, your desire, and your willingness to work and pay the price. You develop yourself, and performance is the best measuring stick.

Secret 6  You won't develop personally by merely looking up at the next rung on the ladder of promotion. The primary test for advancement is how well one does the job. A person of low potential usually regards personal development as unpleasant, requiring sacrifice that hinders present plans for a "good time." People with high potential develop an enthusiasm that makes the so-called sacrifice a thrilling challenge, a part of the "game."

Secret 7  You must continue your education and study on a systematic and planned basis. It's an absolute necessity in the development process. Noah built the ark before it started to rain! Always remember: you can do no better than you know how to do.

Your development is your business possibly the most important business that you will ever own!
